Naval History Essay Contest

At the U.S. Naval Institute, the Naval History Essay Contest is now available that is sponsored by the William M. Wood Foundation. Any contributor like active duty military, reservists, veterans, government civilian personnel, civilians is eligible to apply for the contest. The U.S. Naval Institute provides an independent forum for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to global security.The winners of the essay contest will get prizes as the following: first prize is $5,000, second Prize-$2,500, and third prize-$1,500.

The U.S. Naval Institute has been a fixture at the U.S. Naval Academy since its founding in 1873 by a group of 15 naval officers who began meeting to discuss the serious implications of a smaller, post-Civil War Navy and other matters of professional interest. The William M. Wood Foundation is directed toward charitable organizations located in the geographical vicinity of Louisville, KY, with a focus on the care of the employment of persons who are blind.

Eligibility:

The Contest open to any contributor — active duty military, reservists, veterans, government civilian personnel, civilians.

How to Apply:

To apply for the contest, the applicant must write and submit an essay on the Challenge: How has the intersection of politics and the military shaped the course of the nation?

  • Include Naval History Essay Contest Submission in subject line of email
  • Include word count on title page of essay but do not include your name on title page or within the essay
  • Word Length: 3,000 words maximum

Supporting Documents:

Provide separate attachment to include biography and complete contact information — i.e., work, home, and cell phone numbers, and home mailing address

Submitting Details:

The applicant must submit their complete essay by email to essays-at-usni.org

Financial Aid and Award Money:

The foundation will be awarded total $9000 award prize as the following:

  • First Prize: $5,000
  • Second Prize:$2,500
  • Third Prize: $1,500

All prizes include a one-year membership in the U.S. Naval Institute and a one-year subscription to Naval History magazine.

Application Deadline:

The Naval History Essay Contest is due on August 31, 2017, and the winner will be published in the November/December issue of Naval History.
