When you're in the military, you're busy with duty, career, family, and other high-priority concerns. Your service has earned you benefits, and you may not fully understand to what you are entitled.

A member of an active duty household, Lara is well-aware of the unique financial and emotional challenges that face military service members and their families. After 20 years working in the in the non-profit world with a focus on military and veteran causes, Lara sees her work as a calling. She became a financial advisor after realizing how many people, military members included, don’t practice financial readiness and could benefit from some advice and guidance.

As an advisor with the Northwestern Mutual, Lara works with active duty, veteran and military-connected individuals and organizations and focuses on helping balance financial priorities with life and career planning. Lynn Sarkany is the Executive Director of VetBizCommunity, and has over 20 years experience in working with business startups, and the development and growth of small businesses and entrepreneurial pursuits. Lynn received an MBA Degree with an emphasis in Marketing and Strategic Planning from The Claremont Graduate University, and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from The University of Michigan. She has experience in planning strategy and market entry for a vast array of business types, including domestic and international market entry of inventions and new products, creation and market execution of new business offerings and professional practices, and the optimal development of franchise opportunities based on planned market area.


Megan Kennedy, Veteran & Military Adviser, UC Davis

Understanding your VA Education Benefits - 20 Minute Session

Megan Kennedy is a proud UC Davis Aggie Veteran with a B.A. in Philosophy and Political Science from the College of Letters and Science. She works in UC Davis Undergraduate Admissions as an evaluator, public adviser, and transfer coordinator. She is a U.S. Army Reserve veteran who attended American River College in Sacramento until 2012. She transferred to UC Davis as a reentry and Educational Opportunity Program student besides belonging to the transfer and veteran populations. Currently, Megan is a volunteer Undergraduate Ambassador for Service to School (S2S) helping fellow veterans and service members to gain admission to top-tier universities.

While attending school she served as president of the Davis Student Veteran Organization (DSVO), advocated for veteran and military students on multiple administrative advisory committees, and sat on the Campus Judicial Board. Megan began her career at UC Davis with student employment, and is on her second career staff position. She served on the inaugural board of officers for the staff Veteran Constituency Group (VCG), and serves as an advisor to current DSVO student leadership. She is also member of the campus "Out List" identifying LGBTQIA faculty, staff, and graduate students. Megan is also looking forward to pursuing a graduate program in higher education and a law degree - both at UC Davis.
