|A little over a year ago, a group of volunteer women veterans created the California Women Veterans Leadership Council. Since that time, the Council has met monthly, adopted bylaws, conducted trainings for its members, and created a task force on healthcare.
“We’ve had great success with the Leadership Council this past year and look forward to growing the Council and tackling important priorities for the women veterans of California,” stated Melissa Washington, Navy Veteran and Chair of the California Women Veterans Leadership Council.
To ensure representation in every part of the state, the Council needs more women veteran members. “The focus for this next year will be to recruit new councilmembers, continue the work of the healthcare task force, and identify new issues that women veterans face,” stated Lindsey Sin, Deputy Secretary for Women Veterans Affairs at California Department of Veteran Affairs (CalVet) and advisor to the Council.
Background: Women are now and have always been an important part of securing our freedoms. Two million women nationwide and approximately 163,000 women in California served in the Armed Forces. However, many do not identify as veterans. For this reason and others, women do not access the state and federal veteran’s benefits they earned at the same rates as their male counterparts. Women also have fewer programs and services available to them than male veterans. The purpose of the Council is to identify needs of women veterans, provide benefits information, enhance the positive image of women who serve, and engage local communities to support women veterans.
